Lane End (as distinct from Lane HEAD) was the name given to an area of Droylsden around the junction of Williamson Lane and Ashton Hill Lane. I know that James (born 1772)and Hannah Etchells had a grocer/drapery store there in the late 1820's and that after James' death, Hannah continued the business from 1 & 3 Ashton Hill Lane. This building is still in place. I am searching for any old photos or maps of the area. James' parents were George Etchels (sic) born 1747, weaver, and Grace Sydall, and his grandparents were John Etches (sic) born 1727 and Betty Horsfield.
