Upon looking into the history of our grandfather we find that his grandfather Joseph Lockwood was mayor of Doncaster in 1832. He also filled the office of judge on the racecourse and at one time has a busto of him in the old betting rooms (information from the book "Life of Sir Frank Lockwood' a biographical sketch by Augustine Birrell) His father before him (also Joseph Lockwood) mayor of Doncaster in 1823

I believe that after the death of my ancestor Rev. William Midgley in 1823, a Joseph Lockwood of Doncaster was a guardian and uncle to his three Children ; Sam Whitaker Midgley born 1818, Mary Whitaker Midgley born 1816 and William Midgley born about 1820. If anyone has information about the exact relationship of Joseph Lockwood and the Rev. William Midgley I would be modt interested to hear about it.
