In 2008 I visited the fishing village of Clovelly in north Devon. Set into a steep hillside, the main street winds its way down the 400 foot hill through traditional whitewashed cottages to the picturesque harbour.
Traffic is banned and the hill is so steep that sledges are used for transport. Unusually, the village is privately owned and the owners keep it in the style of the mid-19th Century.
When we arrived in the late afternoon, the sun was casting strong shadows down the hill and I took a large number of photographs, several of which were used in composing this scene, which is taken from the breakwater. I have included a large amount of detail and my aim is to draw the viewer in to explore the village and discover its charms.
