This scene is of a stretch of the Chesterfield Canal near Retford, Nottinghamshire, England. It is based on a series of photographs of the canal and the long boat, Mary Jane, is a composite from a number of boats, so does not actually exist.
I wanted to capture the reflections in the water on a bright late summer day. To provide contrast, I have added some Himalayan Balsam in the foreground. Although this has beautiful flowers, it is regarded as an invasive weed by the UK Environmental Agency. My favourite dog, Oscar, makes another appearance, seen here sitting proudly on the front of Mary Jane.
