My wife and I visited Cordoba in Andalucia, southern Spain in 2004. The city has a long and rich history. It was the capital of the Roman province of Hispania Ulterior Baetica and later occupied an important place in the Byzantine Empire (552-572).
In 716 it was captured by the Muslims, and by the 10th century was one of the largest cities in the world, as well as a great cultural, political and economic centre. The Cordova Mosque, the Mezquita, dates back to this time and was once the second largest mosque in the world. It has now been converted back to a Christian cathedral and we sent some time touring the impressive building.
Upon leaving, we started exploring the local streets and quite by chance entered a narrow alleyway called Calleje de las Flores. At the end we were greeted by the wonderful sight depicted in this painting. You can see the main bell tower of the Mezqita in the background.
