In 2007 I visited Barrington Court, a National Trust property near Ilminster in Somerset with my wife and two friends, Mark and Marilyn Gritten. It was a beautiful August day and the flowers were at their best. The elegant formal gardens were influenced by the garden designer Gertrude Jekyll and are laid out in a series of "rooms". In the part of the garden shown in this painting, I was impressed by the sheer range of colours and density of the blooms. I just had to paint it.
I have produced two versions of this picture; one with my two friends in it as shown above and the other without them present. In 2009 this painting received a commendation in the SAA Artist of the Year Competition
